27 June 2013 British Columbia: McQueen’s Slough near Dawson Creek

This slough is a classic example of an oasis for waterbirds and other marsh birds in the middle of the Canadian Prairies.  It is a birding hotspot east of Dawson Creek.  I took some video of Eared Grebes and a male Blue-winged Teal.

The weather finally cleared but it was very windy which made it difficult to hear or record birds.  I recorded 6 males and now it’s time to head to Dawson Creek and eventually on to Edmonton.

It''s like baseball - I am currently in a rain delay.  I was able to record one more Mourning Warbler.  I am headed to Morberly Lake to finish sampling in this area.

Chetwynd is an extremely significant study site because it is part of the hybrid zone between Mourning Warblers and MacGillivray's Warblers.  I have included a habitat shot below which is like most of the other habitat photos I have posted: roadside brush and logging clearcuts. I came up on this Bobcat/Lynx while driving along Wildmare Rd.  I also captured some video of Red Crossbill, Lynx and Black-tailed Deer.

I was able to take some video of some more bears but this time it was Black Bears.  I had success at Carp Lake and McLeod Lake and have some examples of habitat below.  It is also an area where there has been some extensive Pine Beetle devastation.  I am headed to my last study sites in Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge in the hybrid zone.
